Basic information
The Center of Excellence for Sustainability of Health, Environment, and Industry (SHEI) at the Faculty of Engineering, Naresuan University, has been actively engaged in the realms of environmental restoration, wastewater treatment, water reuse, and environmental and health impact assessment since its establishment in 2012. Recognized as a pioneering force in remedial engineering in Thailand, SHEI has fostered collaborative efforts as a consultant for affected communities, government agencies, and owners of potentially responsible contaminated sites.
Over the years, SHEI has undertaken investigations at more than 50 contaminated sites, achieving significant success in remediating seven of them. The methodologies employed include soil vapor extraction, in-well treatment with chemical oxidation, colloidal carbon injection, colloidal iron oxide injection, magnetic-assisted soil washing with zerovalent iron, and phytoremediation. These interventions not only showcase SHEI’s expertise but also underscore its commitment to sustainable solutions.
Furthermore, SHEI has emerged as a leading institute in researching water reuse for commercial and institutional buildings within the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) in Thailand. Amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, SHEI demonstrated its agility and societal impact by applying sewage surveillance as an early warning system for the spread of COVID-19 across six provinces. This proactive measure not only saved thousands of lives but also resulted in substantial cost savings in healthcare.
In alignment with the global imperative for carbon neutrality, SHEI is at the forefront of innovation, currently developing an advanced bioreactor to transform CO2 into biofuel for industrial applications. This initiative reflects SHEI’s dedication to addressing contemporary environmental challenges through cutting-edge research and technological advancements.
In summary, SHEI at Naresuan University stands as a beacon of excellence, contributing significantly to sustainable practices, environmental remediation, and the intersection of health, industry, and the environment.
